If you are into ice skating, you are very aware of how costly they can be.
You may be considering buying used. If this is the case, there are a few things to take into consideration.
Used ice skates could be an ideal purchase for a recreational skater, someone who skates less than ten times a year. If you are planning to ice skate on a more serious level, where practices and maybe even competitions are involved, you are going to be better off buying a new pair of skates.
If you are still considering buying a pair of used ice skates, there are a few things you should look for.
How old is the skate?
Throughout the evolution of ice skating, the way skates are made, has changed a lot. Newer skates are made with better padding and much better support than skates that were made 20 years ago. The boot part is made much better now. A lot of them are made with much better padding and are even heat moldable, which means as they warm up, they mold to the shape of your foot. These improvements in the boot construction will be of great benefit to those trying to advance in figure skating.
How long were they previously skated in?
This is something to place high consideration upon when it comes to used ice skates. Chances are if a child owned the skates, they were not skated in for a very long time. Children tend to outgrow their show size quickly. If this is the case, you could be getting a good deal on a used pair of skates. On the other hand, if an adult owned the skates, it is quite likely they were slipped in a good bit. Unless the previous owner was a recreational skater.
Did the previous owner purchase them new or used?
Certainly, a question worth asking. If the previous owner purchased the skates used, you would want to steer clear. Although they may look to be in good condition cosmetically, there is a good chance that they will no longer offer the support you need to skate successfully.
These are only a few factors to take into consideration before buying used ice skates. There are obviously other things you should consider before buying used. You do not want to spend your money on a used pair, to only have to spend again on a new pair in a couple of months.
