Building a Sagester kit rather than buying one piece

Most skaters end up owning three Sagester layers rather than one, because a skating day is not one temperature. A dress or a leotard is what goes on the ice for the run-through. Pants and a jacket go over the top for the warm-up, the walk from the car park and the long wait between groups. A thermal leotard sits underneath when the rink is genuinely cold. The shared contrast edge colours across the jackets and pants exist for exactly this reason: a warm-up set can be assembled to match without hunting.

Choosing between a dress and a leotard

For a competition or a test, a fitted dress gives the cleanest line and is the piece choreographed around. For everyday training, a leotard does the same job with less to look after and layers more easily under pants and a jacket — which is why most skaters own more leotards than dresses. The high-neck and low-neck versions are a matter of coverage and of what sits well with a warm-up layer over it; the two thermal versions exist for rinks where you can see your breath. A skirt sits between the two: it dresses a practice leotard up, or adds coverage without committing to a full dress.

Men’s and boys’ pieces

The men’s side of the range is jackets, shirts and pants, hand-made in Italy and sized 36 to 50 rather than on the small-to-large scale that runs through the women’s and girls’ pieces. That numeric sizing is closer to tailoring than to sportswear, so measure chest and waist and read them against the chart on the listing rather than translating from a shirt size you already own.

Sizing and care

Skating apparel is cut close to give a clean line, so your usual street size is a poor guide — take bust, waist and hip measurements, and for a growing skater torso length as well, and check them against the chart on each style. Stretch fabrics hold their shape on a cool hand-wash without fabric softener, pressed out rather than wrung, and dried flat; anything with applied crystals should never see a machine or a dryer. Store pieces flat rather than hung, which stretches shoulders over a season.
